BIS CRS — Compulsory Registration for Electronics & IT Products

Registration under the Compulsory Registration Scheme — testing coordination, application filing, AIR support and follow-up to grant.

What is BIS CRS

The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) was notified by MeitY through the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012, dated 3 Oct 2012, covering fifteen categories of electronics items. Another 15 categories were added on 13 Nov 2014 and 13 more on 23 Aug 2017. Solar products fall under the MNRE Solar Photovoltaics Order, 2017, dated 5 Sep 2017.

Under the Order, no person shall manufacture or store for sale, import, sell or distribute goods which do not conform to the specified Indian standard. Manufacturers apply to BIS after testing in a BIS-recognized laboratory; BIS then registers the manufacturer to use the notified Standard Mark.

Who needs BIS CRS registration

  • Manufacturers — in India or abroad — of any product notified in the Compulsory Registration Orders
  • A separate registration number for products made at different locations
  • A separate registration number for each brand made at the same location

The notified product list keeps expanding — we confirm whether your product and brand are covered before filing.

The exact document set is confirmed for your case at engagement — current BIS forms and annexures apply.

BIS CRS FAQs

What is the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)?

The Compulsory Registration Scheme was notified by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) through the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012, dated 3 October 2012, covering fifteen categories of electronics items. Another 15 product categories were added on 13 November 2014 and a further 13 on 23 August 2017. Solar products fall under the MNRE Solar Photovoltaics, Systems, Devices and Components Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2017, dated 5 September 2017.

Who can apply for BIS CRS registration?

Manufacturers of any product notified in the Compulsory Registration Orders, located in India or outside India, can apply. A separate registration number is required for products manufactured at different locations, and for each brand manufactured at the same location.

Is product testing required before applying?

Yes. Manufacturers must get their product tested in a BIS-recognized laboratory before applying to BIS. BIS registers the manufacturer only after checking the documents and technical details, and the registered manufacturer may then use the notified Standard Mark.
