The WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination) wing is the national broadcasting authority and part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Founded in 1952 and headquartered in New Delhi — with regional offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta and Guwahati — its main tasks are issuing amateur radio licences and allocating and monitoring the frequency spectrum.
WPC issues Equipment Type Approval (ETA), Type Approval, Experimental Approval, Dealer and non-Dealer Possession Licences (DPL and NDPL), and Import Licences for radio equipment. For foreign producers, in most cases only the ETA is relevant — WPC certification is used abroad as a synonym for ETA.
